How we're funded

GambleAware, through the Office of Responsible Gambling, is funded by the Responsible Gambling Fund (RGF). The NSW Government set up the RGF to encourage responsible gambling, reduce harm caused by gambling, and help address and prevent gambling-related issues.

Who pays for the RGF

Right now, the Casino Control Act 1992 requires casino licensees in NSW to contribute 2% of gaming revenue to the RGF. There are also community benefit payments and gaming machine lease levy payments made by some clubs and hotels under the Gaming Machines Act 2001. The Betting Tax Act 2001 also allows the Treasurer to pay certain amounts to the Fund, which is from a tax on wagering expenditure in NSW.

How the RGF is administered

Trustees appointed by the Minister, supported by the Office of Responsible Gambling, administer the RGF. They make recommendations to the Minister on where the money would be best spent on responsible gambling and gambling harm minimisation in the areas of research, community education, support services and support for policy and regulation. They also provide expert advice to help the Minister make decisions on the fund as well as gambling policy, where an arm's-length and expert view is necessary.

The fund is governed by a Trust Deed and Policy Guidelines. The guidelines are issued by the Minister, consistent with section 115 of the Casino Control Act.
